I disagree with this. The A-frame chalkboard signs are part of the personality of this area and I find them cute and quaint, often with much artistry by the business. I do not recall one time having to step around them - they seem to be placed with consideration by the businesses. I am happy with them placed by small independent businesses. I would be extremely unhappy if it were corporate advertising, but as they are now, they have led me to little shops I would not have found otherwise and I like them.
